An essential part of gas welding is the pressure regulator. It is a type of valve that regulates the pressure of the gas and only allows the required value of the gas to flow from within.

Introduction of the pressure regulator

As we know, the gas in the cylinder is in a compressed form and cannot be used directly because the gas is used in the welding process to ignite the flame by mixing two gases in a controlled manner, to control the flow of gases, Pressure regulator is used. The primary function of the pressure regulator is to maintain a constant output pressure according to the gas demand.

Pressure regulator Used in Gas welding

Oxygen is used in gas welding along with any other flammable gas which can be hydrogen, acetylene, propane or butane, so two types of pressure regulators are used in this process.
Pressure regulators can be defined as:

  • Single-stage pressure regulator
  • Two-stage pressure regulator

  • Single-stage regulator

As we can see in the diagram above, in a single-phase pressure regulator, the regulation of pressure from the cylinder pressure to the welding pressure occurs in a single phase. The pressurized gas from the cylinder enters the regulator through the inlet valve. The gas enters the body of the pressure regulator, which is controlled by applying it to the spring through an adjustment screw.
When the pressure is increased, the diaphragm gets a push that is supported by the spring. The spring is stressed, closing the inlet valve to which it is connected, and preventing any excess gas from entering the regulator. A single-phase regulator is indeed required for both oxygen regulation and acetylene regulation for the oxy-acetylene welding process. This can be followed based on the method used to close the seat mechanism and thereby control the gas flow.

  • Direct or nozzle type
  • Stem type reversal

  • Direct or nozzle type
In the direct, or nozzle type, the seat is forced to close against the flow of gas to the incoming high-pressure gas.

Stem type reversal the direct, the seat is forced to close against the flow of gas to the incoming high-pressure gas.

A single-stage regulator freezes in cold weather because it is the rapid cooling of the gas due to a sudden spread and a drop in initial pressure.

    Double stage regulator

The principle of the double-stage regulator is also similar to that of the single-stage pressure regulator, but the gas pressure is regulated in two stages. It consists of two diaphragms and two control valves. So that the pressure reduction ratio is less abrupt.in the first stage the gas pressure is automatically reduced .the the second stage is a preset stage, As we can see in the above picture, the second stage of pressure reduction being controlled by the welder by way of the adjustable screw and sprig valve.
Basically, the two-stage pressure regulators are used with cylinders and manifolds. A two-stage pressure regulator may include the stages like:

    Two direct types of stages
First direct type stage and second inversed type stage.

  • Two-stage pressure regulators of mixed-phase types are the most common The same situation occurs in the first reduction phase of the two-stage regulator. The second stage is not sufficiently affected to cause noticeable pressure disturbances.
